In Jaunpur district, a head constable lost his life after being run over by a pickup truck driven by cattle smugglers. Following this tragic event, law enforcement engaged in a confrontation that resulted in the death of one smuggler, while two others sustained gunshot wounds to their legs.
A senior police official provided details on Sunday, stating that Uttar Pradesh's Director General of Police (DGP) Prashant Kumar released a statement regarding the ongoing operation in Jaunpur. The officer in charge of Chandvak police station, Satya Prakash Singh, along with his team, was patrolling the Azamgarh-Varanasi route around 11:50 PM on Saturday when they spotted several smugglers traveling towards Varanasi in a pickup truck.
Police Response
Kumar explained that when the police attempted to stop the vehicle, the smugglers tried to ram their pickup into the officers. During this chaotic moment, the vehicle struck Head Constable Durgesh Kumar Singh, who was subsequently left injured as the smugglers fled towards Varanasi.
Following the incident, the police mobilized quickly, and the district's Special Operations Group (SOG) pursued the pickup. Unfortunately, the severely injured head constable was transported to the Varanasi Trauma Center, where he was pronounced dead by medical staff.
Investigation and Pursuit
The police have initiated an investigation by filing a case against the unidentified driver of the pickup truck at the Chandvak police station. Meanwhile, officers tracked the smugglers to Taal Bela village in the Cholapur area of Varanasi, where the suspects abandoned their vehicle and fled on two motorcycles towards Chandvak.
According to police reports, one group of smugglers fired at the Chandvak police team with the intent to kill, prompting the officers to return fire in self-defense.
Casualties and Arrests
During the exchange, a bullet struck Salman, a resident of Muthrapur Kotwa in Jaunpur, in the chest. He was rushed to a Community Health Center (CHC) but was later referred to Jaunpur District Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
In addition to Salman, two other individuals, Narendra Yadav from Chowbe Pur in Varanasi and Golu Yadav from Tadiya, were shot in the legs and have been arrested for medical treatment. Meanwhile, three other suspects—Rahul Yadav, Raju Yadav, and Azad Yadav—managed to escape, and police are actively searching for them.
